Burgerliche Archive (Burgergemeinde, societies and guilds)
The Burgerbibliothek Bern holds the administrative archives of the authorities, institutions and departments of the Burgergemeinde Bern, together with the archives of the Bernburger societies and guilds. The records in this division are subject to Bern’s cantonal Archiving Act. For records containing personal data, the provisions of the cantonal Data Protection Act apply, with the result that their use in certain cases is restricted or only permitted in response to a request under the cantonal Freedom of Information Act. If a request is made, the Burgerbibliothek will forward it to the relevant office. It is also worth noting that an extensive collection of maps and plans from the Burgergemeinde is accessible online, comprising more than 3,500 items.
