The Burgerbibliothek Bern is the archives for the Burgergemeinde and provides it with support on matters relating to the transfer and archiving of records. The Burgergemeinde’s authorities, institutions and departments as well as the Bernburger societies and guilds are required by law to archive their records. The procedure is governed by the following legislation:

• Verordnung über die Bearbeitung von Daten und Geschäften, die Archivierung und Information
• Weisung betreffend die Übergabe von Unterlagen an die Burgerbibliothek
