History and services offered

Bern’s Burgerbibliothek can trace its beginnings back to the 16th century. Founded as the Liberey for the Hohe Schule of the time, a college of divinity, in the 17th century it became the city library (or citizens’ library: Burgerbibliothek) and in the 20th century the city and university library (Stadt- und Hochschulbibliothek).

In 1951, it underwent a fundamental reorganisation: the print collections were transferred to the Stiftung Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Bern (Bern City and University Library Foundation), today the University Library of Bern. As newly-established archives repository, the Burgerbibliothek Bern assumed responsibility for all the archival fonds, the collection of mediaeval manuscripts and also from 1976 the graphics collection, photographic holdings and paintings. Since the 1990s, the Burgerbibliothek has also officially served as the archives for Bern’s Burgergemeinde as well as the Bernburger societies and guilds. Despite its function as an archives, the Burgerbibliothek Bern has retained its historical name.

Today the Burgerbibliothek is organised into four divisions: as the communal archives, it holds the records of the authorities, institutions and departments of the Burgergemeinde Bern as well as the Bernburger societies and guilds. In addition, it offers access to private archives, i.e. archival fonds from individuals, families, businesses and associations that have a connection with Bern. And lastly, the Burgerbibliothek holds two extensive special collections: mediaeval and early modern manuscripts and historical images in the form of drawings, watercolours, prints, photographs and paintings.

You can use the archives catalogue to search for and order items in the collections. You can then view the documents free of charge in the reading room or – in the case of digitised holdings – directly online. If you place an order, the Burgerbibliothek Bern will also provide you with digital copies for a fee. The team will be pleased to answer your questions about searching and using the archives.

The Burgerbibliothek Bern also enhances Bern’s cultural life with its events and exhibitions, guided tours and publications.
