Your first visit
Here you can get an idea beforehand of what your first visit to the Burgerbibliothek Bern will involve. You can find out here how best to prepare for your visit.

02 Cloakroom lockers
- Leave your jacket and luggage in the cloakroom locker (obligatory; 1 CHF/1 € coin required).
- You are allowed to take the following into the reading room: work materials such as your mobile phone, camera, laptop, pencil and notepaper and any valuables.
- Not allowed in the reading room: food and drinks.

04 Registering with the reading room staff
- Show your identification document.
- Take the registration form.
- Lay your work materials down at a free work station.
- Complete the registration form, and by doing so accept the User Rules and Regulations.

05 Taking receipt of your order
- The reading room staff will ask you to sign the order you have already submitted.
- If necessary, they will also ask you to sign a user declaration (to protect the rights of third parties to personal privacy, see User Rules and Regulations).
- You will then be given the first unit of description you have ordered (for example a dossier or a volume).

06 Handling the ordered documents
- Handle the documents at your work station: foam pads and lead cord weights are available if required.
- If you wish to make handwritten notes, you may only use a pencil (provided).
- Gloves (provided) must be worn when handling photographic materials.
- When you return the ordered unit of description to the reading room staff, you will be given the next unit of description.

09 Practical tips for your visit
- For refreshments and a reinvigorating break, visit the Lesbar on the ground floor or the lounge on the 1st floor of the University Library next door.
- Toilets are available on the 1st basement level (take the lift or the stairs by the main entrance).
