Private archives

The private archives, with 2200 linear metres of documents on Bernese and Swiss history, make up the largest section of the Burgerbibliothek of Berne. The archives from natural and legal entities document a broad written tradition from the 13th to the 21st century which originated outside the administrative context. The archives today also include collections of visual culture and digital material on data carriers of various kinds. The private archives are listed in the Online Archive Catalogue and additional finding aids are available in the Reading Room.

The manuscripts which were moved in 1951 from the former City and University Library to the Burgerbibliothek of Berne make up the oldest section:
